How to Make Money Online: 5 Mistakes to Avoid

Making money online is not rocket science. Thousands--maybe millions--of individuals are making a living from their online endeavors every single day. However, finding a way to support yourself financially through internet marketing is also not a "get rich quick" scheme. It does take some understanding of the rules of the game and you do need to develop some awareness of the landscape. There are five common mistakes that beginning and intermediate marketers make when trying to build an online empire.
1. Your Niche is Overly Saturated
Finding and filling a niche as a marketer is the first step one must take to make money online. However, all too often, people want to fill niches that are already overly saturated. Cameras, electronics, weight loss systems, and strategies to stop smoking cigarettes are all areas that immediately draw people to the net. They think they will make millions with these niches. Yet these are among the most populated in the online game. Although, just because the niche is full still doesn't mean that you can't make money. You might want to figure out a new angle on an old niche or you simply might want to look elsewhere.
2. Your Keywords are too Common
Too broad a niche and keywords that are too common will kill your energy. This is learned by most of us in the first few months--and sometimes years--of trying to make a living online. However, there are just as many keywords as your mind can imagine. Increasingly, people are paying more attention to the "long tail" of search terms. The "long tail" describes very specific searches that people make. For example, while a common search term might be "how can I lose weight fast," a query that is considered long tail might be "starting a diet program on Tuesdays." (I am merely bringing this up as an example). So step away from common search terms.
3. Lack of Knowledge
When I first started this game, I didn't have the slightest idea about significant aspects of this world. I had no clue what SEO stood for. Even when I discovered that it was an abbreviation for search engine optimization, I was still confused as to how to translate that knowledge to real results. Additionally, I refused to follow the advice of those who came before me and I neglected to develop a list. I didn't pay attention to CTRs, backlinks, or the power of social networking. Lack of knowledge killed me. Don't let it kill you.
4. Lack of Focus
Focus is the key. If you want to succeed at this business, then you need to develop a plan and stick with it. All too often I see people who have a little bit of energy and a little bit of knowledge and want to apply it to everything and anything that comes into their minds. In the end, they have registered fifty different domain names, advertising fifty different affiliate products, but have not spent any time on figuring out how they are going to grow their list or develop significant traffic. Focus is the key. Figure out one thing. Work on it and succeed. Once you have reached a pre-developed goal, replicate your strategy. Roll out your business slowly.
5. Lack of Follow-through
Burnout is incredibly high in this world. Don't let it happen to you. So many aspects of this life can be automated that burnout should not be a significant factor in leading you to decide to throw in the towel. Develop a plan and stick to it. Decide to give yourself three to six months to see the results of your endeavors pay off. Making money online is something that absolutely anyone can do.

Affiliate Marketing: 5 Common Mistakes That Lead to Failure

Creating lifelong customer value with your aff...Creating lifelong customer value with your affiliate marketing business. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

From the outset, I think most affiliate marketers will agree that making money online is not rocket science. While it may not be as easy as many squeeze pages like to make it sound, it also isn't as difficult as it initially seems. Once you have discovered the perfect niche and an affiliate product or program within this niche, making money is merely the benefit of following a strategy and sticking to it.
However, far too many people are unable to realize any level of financial gain in internet marketing and creating an online passive income. Individuals who are new to the world of internet marketing do not fully understand how focused, organized, and productive one must be in order to make money online. Through making mistakes, knowledge is gained. As a former newbie myself, here are five mistakes that most newbies make that will guarantee failure.
Newbies take what is given to them. I remember a few years back, there was an online ad network guru who was selling instructional videos on the ins-and-outs of using a very popular advertising program. In each example, he attempted to demonstrate his theories by using dog grooming as a niche. Inevitably, hundreds of thousands of dog grooming websites and blogs appeared online as a result of these instructional videos, as most people didn't understand the nuance in the example. This happened to me, as well. I remember that I downloaded an eBook that suggested I build affiliate review sites for products in niches spanning from cake decorating to teaching people how to give sermons. Needless to say, my affiliate earnings remained flat in those areas.
In addition to doing your research to discover the perfect niche for you, you should also pay attention to what your own passions and interests are and develop websites, blogs, and promotion of products around a knowledge base you already have.
They don't try the product first. Another mistake newcomers make when trying to create more passive income streams is one of total and utter ignorance. Often times, people are attempting to sell a product without being able to bring anything new to the discussion because they haven't tried the product first. If the product costs money to try, and you haven't purchased it, what makes you think that I will? Chances are a visitor to your website will understand your lack of knowledge about a product and be able to see through your smokescreen.
Making wild and unsubstantiated claims. Even though billions of people are online and--on any given night--millions are surfing the internet trying to find an easy way to make a six-figure income in their spare time, by making wild and ridiculous claims about your revenues and earnings will only lead people to identify you as a fraud. People are looking for help. They don't want to be swindled.
Wasting time learning by reading, instead of learning by doing. The internet is an incredible treasure chest of information. In starting to develop ways to increase your income by promoting affiliate products, there is the danger of spending far too many nights reading blog post after blog post or thread after thread on popular forums. After a certain point, you need to realize that there is such a thing as information saturation. At that point, the only way that information is going to stick is if you learn through your own experiences of successes and challenges.
Dropping out too early. This is a classic experience. The internet is a graveyard of abandoned projects and forgotten plans. Some nights, meandering through links on the internet is like walking through the dusty, ramshackle remains of an Old West ghost town after the gold vein went dry. People think that promoting a product will create a "virtual ATM machine" or will "create riches overnight." After three or six weeks of little to no returns, the creators vanish, leaving behind half-built visions of success. If you are going to make money online, then you are going to have to commit to the process for three, six, nine months or more. And, besides, why quit five minutes before the miracle?
Avoiding these common mistakes in internet marketing will not guarantee financial success beyond your wildest dreams, but you will probably avoid total failure. At the start, making money online is hard work that takes a high level of focus, dedication, and determination. Are you willing to see the payoff?

Making Money Online: Newbie Mistakes to Avoid

Christopher Reid Internet Marketing EntrepreneurChristopher Reid Internet Marketing Entrepreneur (Photo credit: Wikipedia)When making money online, there are some pretty universal paths to financial success, yet there are a ton of mistakes that are common among new internet marketers. These new kids on the block are referred to as "newbies." Newbies often have big dreams of financial success but, just as often, make the same mistakes that serve as obstacles in their path of achieving these dreams.
But there are some pretty common mistakes that newbies can avoid when establishing themselves as internet marketers. And these mistakes are highlighted below:
1. Don't give up too soon Newbies splash into the world of internet marketing, spend the next ten days developing their websites, become incredibly active forum users hoping to drive traffic back to their websites...and then disappear entirely. The hard truth about internet marketing is that it will take longer than ten days for you to see some financial rewards. The other hard truth is that it may take up to six months to a year before your first website becomes a hit. The good news? After you have established your first site, you get to replicate the results much more quickly the second and third time out of the gate. Don't give you too soon before you can see the rewards of your hard work.
2. Don't spam forums Popular internet marketing forums are filled with men and women who have honed their crafts. I actually don't often take part in the conversation on forums for fear that I don't have much to add to a thread. Newbies, however, are not as economical with their knowledge and often point people to links that even have less value. Additionally, develop a signature link that is specific to you.
3. Increase your action ratio Often times, newbies get lost in a process that I call information saturation. They spend their hours online reading and reading and reading, rather than doing. Or they find a product and think they will spend time promoting it, only to be distracted by the next new shiny object in front of them. I suggest that all newbies decrease their research time and increase the amount of time they spend implementing their business plan and online presence. Please don't misunderstand me: Research is necessary, good, and important. But at some point, you will need to act!
4. Pay attention to your reputation In short, don't be the guy that everyone hates. Learn how to develop relationships with those who can help you and, in return, learn how you can teach others and help others out. Nobody likes to help that guy they hate.
5. Cloak your affiliate links I didn't understand what this meant when I first started out trying to make money online and I wonder how many affiliate sales I lost. It is absolutely crucial that you learn how to cloak your affiliate links when promoting a product.
I will be honest. The reason that I am so blunt with these tips isn't because I despise newbies--it's because I used to be one of them! It is important for us to share what we have learned to make the path just a little bit easier for those who follow us.

Affiliate Marketing: Five Mistakes I Made Early On

Monroe ParkMonroe Park (Photo credit: The Library of Virginia)
If you want to become successful in any career, you are going to make mistakes. It is unavoidable. Internet marketing and affiliate marketing are two areas that truly are a minefield of possible mistakes. In short, there is the potential of screwing up at nearly every decision point.
In the five years since I first started to make money online, I have made hundreds of mistakes. Some have been small errors, while some have probably cost me thousands of dollars. Below is a list of errors that I made and I hope you can learn from them.
1. The Autoresponder Problem - When people start out, they don't think that they need a list. Then for the next few months or years, they neglect to build a list until it dawns on them that they could have been leveraging this list for ideas or for possible additional commissions the entire time. Or people did what I did when I started out. They think that they can handle the list on their own through whatever product their web host offers.
Bottom line: Spend a little money to save yourself from future headaches. Go with a company that provides this service for you.
2. Promoting the wrong program - The first product I ever bought online was a book. The book was only about $10 and--according to the pitch--if I took the secrets in the book, I would make millions. Well, the book only taught me how to promote the book in forums. I learned nothing except "buyer beware." Thankfully, I never signed up for a cash gifting program in my early days.
Bottom line: Google a program for honest reviews about the product. Just do a quick Google search and in no time you will be able to piece together what the product/program is all about.
3. Lost Sales Because I Lost My Credit Card - This one is my favorite. I remember it well. I spent time putting together my first ebook and sold it on a forum. I made a killing, but after a few days the sales dropped down to zero. I couldn't figure out what was wrong. So I contacted eJunkie (they were processing all the orders). Turns out my credit card was no longer valid. You see, a few weeks before I lost my card and had it replaced. I neglected to update my online accounts. I lost a few thousand dollars with that mistake.
Bottom line: Make sure you are organized at every turn. Check and recheck.
4. I Took Success for Granted - This is probably one of the universal mistakes new internet marketers make. Each signs up for a program, thinking that it will be an immediate passive income stream. When I first started out online, I expected as much. I thought because I bought a product that I would soon see the benefits. I soon learned differently.
Bottom line: Like most things worth doing in life, you should expect to put in a good amount of effort if you want to succeed at internet marketing.
5. I Killed a Website - I killed a website way before its time. Back in 2006, people were doing relatively well financially. I had put a lot of time and effort into a personal finance website that was earning me quite a lot of money. By the middle of 2008, I just got bored with it and killed the project entirely. Shortly thereafter, the economic crisis began and my website had a ton of products that could have made me a ton of money. But because I killed the site, I lost all of my leverage in the community.
Bottom line: I put a lot of work into the site, I should have been more careful in ending the project.
I want to say "learn from my mistakes" or "don't make the mistakes I did." Unfortunately, you will make mistakes--and gloriously so. The only way that we can really develop our skills and hone our talents is by sharpening them with a mix of successes and failures. That's the most effective way to learn.
